Historically, the laboratory used simple chemistry, or spot tests, progressing to thin layer chromatography, laboratory-based immunoassays and specific chemical assays, gas chromatography/liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and rapid test kits or Point of Care Test (POCT) devices.
